Messenger Bags

A messenger bag is typically a soft kind of backpack, usually made of canvas. It’s worn over one arm with a long strap that hangs down over the back, resting the bag on your lower back. Though courier workers once only use messenger bags, they’re now also a popular urban fashion icon. Still, some varieties of messenger bags have become known simply as carryalls.

The earliest models of messenger bags were large and rectangular. In recent years, however, more modern designs have come onto the market. These larger and slimmer backpacks replace the large rectangular backpacks and feature a very soft lining. They can carry a laptop, although many people use a separate briefcase instead.

Another favored style of messenger bags, which is no longer limited to the courier industry, is a rectangular soft briefcase. Some have a leather or waterproof lining. This is a nice choice for a woman who works in offices that get extremely humid, such as law offices, or even government buildings. Most of these briefcases sport a single main compartment, where you can keep your laptop securely. Other compartments are usually present as well, for smaller items, documents, pens, and other small accessories.

Before messenger bags came into popular use, there was no other option for people on the go. Back then, it was necessary to carry either a lightweight piece of clothing like a shirt or a skirt or a heavy backpack. People on the go did not have the luxury of carrying around a bag, so they used whatever they could find lying around. Of course, back in the ancient times there were no pockets, so carrying anything larger than a shirt or pants was out of the question.

The straps of messenger bags were quite primitive by today’s standards. There were no belts or buckles, so carrying anything by means of a strap was impossible. Back then, in order to carry a heavier load, a person had to tie several things together – possibly to tie a cloth between two trees! In fact, the most common type of messenger bag was actually a backpack, with a leather strap worn around the shoulder rather than a lock.

Modern messenger bags still use straps as the main means of holding your items, but there are numerous styles and colors to choose from. For instance, back in the day, you would probably choose a color like black, navy blue, or gray. These colors are quite versatile, as they can be worn with just about any type of business attire. They also are made from various materials, including leather, canvas, and a variety of other synthetic fibers. The modern day messenger bags have become a fashion statement, carrying with them your work related items, whether they be for work or leisure.
